Alfa Network: A Better Life For All

News & Updates

1. ALFA Network has made a tremendous difference through educating the community about the infection and spread of HIV/Aids. This is done through clean ups, social games, poems, drama (Theater for development)

2. Child to Child activities is also an initiative that ALFA Network has introduced to the Slum. About 100 children have been reached this way. Some of these children have lost both parents and are living with their relatives. A large number are from single parent headed families. In these families the children face many difficult situations and lack basic necessities. Child To Child participation promotes and preserves the health of the community and enables children to play an active and responsible role in health and development of themselves, other children and their families.

3. Educating children of their rights, child labor & child abuse. ALFA Network is and has done this successfully through the use of teaching material from ANPPCAN (AFRICAN NETWORK FOR THE PREVENTION AND PROTECTION AGAINST CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT). The ALFA Network has found that children of Kibera continuously need to be taught about their rights and how to defend them.

4. Theater for development is an educative activity which promotes self realization and showcases the talents of young people in the community. It also helps to educate the community about health issues through acting and is an entertaining, creative, therapeutic process for the community and children themselves.

5. Girl-Child education is advocated through sports and drama. The girls songs and poems that they have created encourage the community to accept the idea that girls need to be educated. This is a challenge that is currently and continuously being worked on as culturally some men in the community do not feel that women need to be educated.

6. The Embroidery Vocational training program offers single parents and young adults who do not have the funds to attend school a productive skill. ALFA Network has three embroidery machines which are used to teach the embroidery skill. ALFA Network is in need of more machines as the three machines are not enough because the demand for the training is so high and many people want to use them. The goal of the program/training is to empower single parents and young people to acquire skills for survival and to become self - reliant.

7. The Candle Making Vocational program also offers single parents and young adults who do not have the funds to attend school a productive skill. The training program empowers the individuals to acquire a productive skill and become self-reliant.

8. Vocational training for youths and the children in computer literacy is also offered. The training is limited as ALFA Network only has one computer which is used for office work and training the youths and children. As the demand for these computer skills is very high and resources are limited a theoretical class rather than a practical, hands on approach is used most often.
